Cruz, Schatz: Meta Settlement Underscores Need to Pass KOSMA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) released the following statement on the settlement between Meta and 47 states regarding the company’s policies on kids’ online safety:

“We are pleased the settlement agreement reached between dozens of state attorneys general and Meta will require the company to take actionable steps to remove kids under 13 from social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. However, this settlement agreement does not apply to every Big Tech company in all 50 states. It is past time for Congress to pass the Kids Off Social Media Act and protect every child in every state on every social media platform from exploitative Big Tech practices and the harmful effects of social media.”

On Wednesday, August 26, Meta reached a roughly $18 billion settlement agreement with 47 states and territories. The agreement requires Meta to remove children under 13 from its social media platforms and implement other necessary safety features for other minors, including limits on notifications during school and night hours and restrictions on total daily use.
